CALTECH STUDENT HISTORY NOTES

INTERHOUSE COMMITTEE

In the early years the structure of student government at the Institute was essentially unicameral as embodied in ASCIT. However, when student residences began to be established there also arose a need for an authority which would exercise control over those residences and a higher authority which would govern interactions between those residences. To begin with these structures were very informal; each fraternitiy elected a president to help govern its affairs and for a number of years matters proceeded in this informal way. However, as the fraternities came to need a more formal structure in order to control ``rushing'' or the selection of members and in order to help with the organization of joint social functions, it became neccessary to establish an ``Interfraternity Council''. References to the affairs of this ``IFC'' can be found in the 1930 Big ``T''. In that year the council consisted of 10 members, 2 from each of the 5 fraternities. The next year, however, it consisted of three representatives from each fraternity (the President was Sam Eastman).
