CALTECH STUDENT HISTORY NOTES

THE SOUTH HOUSES

Prior to the construction of the south houses, three student delegates, Robert Lehman, Phillip Schoeller and Walter Scholtz went on a tour of the U.S. and parts of Europe to study the best type of living conditions for students. Robert Lehman clearly played a major role throughout the planning process. The plan developed called for four distinct houses rather than dormitories. ``Fraternities have agreed to dissolve to best work out a plan on a thoroughly democratic basis''.

With the establishment of the four new student houses, intermural sports were changed in 1931-32. Previously these had been organized as contests between the years. Now they were organized as contests between the four houses plus a team from the Non-Resident Club, often known simply as ``The Club''. Moreover, the series of contests known as ``Discobolus'' began almost immediately and continues to this day.
