CHAPTER SEVEN

THE McREYNOLDS FAMILY

MacRanald, McReynolds or other variants are patronymic forms of the name of Keppoch Macdonells. John M'Rynald was a tenant of Eddirallekach, Strogartnay in 1483 and Donald McRanald appears several times as a tenant in Kintyre in 1506. Since it is a short distance from the end of the Kintyre peninsula to the coast of County Antrim there have been movements of people between the two since long before historic times.

The records show that the McReynolds family have lived in the area between Cookstown and Stewartstown for a very long time. For example, in the 1666 Hearth Money Roll, a Hugh McRannell is listed as resident in Ballynagowan, parish of Ballyclog; Ballynagowan is a townland in East Tyrone, just east of Drumcairne and south of Stuart Hall. However our earliest known probable ancestor is John McRannells (McReynolds) with whom we begin our extensive account of the McReynolds family. There is no doubt that our ancestor, Martha McReynolds, belonged to this family. However her precise connection is tantalizingly elusive. After extensive study I believe that she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary McReynolds as described below. However there must be some doubt about this until definitive proof becomes available.

Area south of Coagh where the McReynolds lived.

John McRannells, it is said, was was a direct descendant of Alexander de Insulus, third son of John, Lord of the Isles, and his wife, Princess Margaret Stewart, the daughter of King Robert II of Scotland and great granddaughter of Robert Bruce. The records tell of the baptism of a son, Johne, of Johne McRannald and his wife Kathleen, whose maiden name was Mcilstalker. The baptism took place on Aug.11, 1672, in Inveraray and Glenaray, Argyllshire, and is recorded in the parochial register of the county of Argyll. Legend has it that that John could speak the Scotch language better than English. As a young man he enlisted in the British Army and was sent to Ireland where he is said to have participated in the defence of the city of Londonderry during the famous siege in 1689. A story is told that he gave one of his fellow defenders a beating for allowing a rat they could have eaten to escape. Later, he is said to have left the army and migrated to County Tyrone with his two younger brothers. They settled near Charlemont and Moy. In 1703 he married Mary Preston, born in 1683 the daughter of Thomas Preston. They made their residence at Cloghog, County Tyrone. It was the first McReynolds home in the area and was constructed shortly after their marriage. Fire gutted the building in the latter part of the last century but it was rebuilt and is still occupied by a descendant, Adeline McReynolds. John and Mary had three sons, James, Benjamin and Oliver listed below. Mary died on Jul.15, 1713, at the young age of 30 and there is a gravestone inscription about 15 feet from the front door of the Clonoe parish church which reads:
``Here lyeth the body of Mary Preston, wife of John McCrannels, who departed this life July 15, 1713, aged thirty years; also Thomas Preston who departed this life January 11, 1705, aged 78 years.''
After Mary's death John moved to the townland of Coash in the parish of Killyman. He was married for a second time on Jun.18, 1714, to a Quaker, Elizabeth Shepherd the daughter of Solomon Shepherd, at the Quaker meeting house at Grange near Moy. It is said that the Quaker Church and ``Old Grange House'' are still standing. Other marriages in the Quaker records from this period include those of Patrick, Susannah and James McRannell or McReynolds and they may have been John's close relatives. John and Elizabeth had four surviving children, Joseph, Elizabeth, James and Robert. John and Elizabeth lived about two miles from Dungannon. By this time John had accumulated considerable wealth having large farms and two mills, one in Killyman parish and the other in Clonoe parish. For some unknown reason the marriage failed and, in 1738, Elizabeth and her four children emigrated to the United States where they settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She died at an old age in the home of her son James in Appomattox County, Virginia. This American branch of the McReynolds family is described briefly in Appendix 6A. Perhaps because of his advanced age (he was 72) John remained in Ireland and lived with his children by his first wife. He died at a ripe old age at the home of a grandson in Stewartstown and is buried in Ballyclog parish cemetery.

CHILDREN OF JOHN AND MARY PRESTON McRANNELLS:

James McRannells, the eldest son of John and Mary Preston McRannells was born at Cloghog, County Tyrone. We do not know his wife's name but they had at least five children described below.

Benjamin McRannells, the second son of John and Mary Preston McRannells died at the age of 17.

Oliver McRannells, the third son of John and Mary Preston McRannells, was born at Cloghog and married Martha Cornwall. After his step-mother and half-brothers and sister emigrated to the U.S. in 1737, Oliver was bequeathed the Killyman farm and mill by his father. He and his wife made this their home. Their children:

  1. James McReynolds was born in 1747 and married Mary Heather on Jan.22, 1782. He clearly became a wealthy man probably by farming and milling. The surviving legal agreements attest to this fact. These records included marriage settlements for two of his daughters. They also include a lease dated Nov., 1809, from Thomas Knox of Dungannon to James McReynolds, Coash, yeoman, for land in Mullaghteague, parish of Killyman and at Gortshalgan. In a later lease dated 1825 James is listed as ``of Mullaghteague''. He died on Mar.13, 1833. In his will, dated Mar.8, 1833, his residence is given as Mullaghteague, County Tyrone, and he holds land in Gortshalgan, Drumgose, Renaghan, Mullaghteague, Lower Meenagh, Drummurrer and Cloghog. The children of James and Mary McReynolds:
    1. Charlotte McReynolds was born in 1783. On Jan.16, 1800, she married Robert King of Larchmount, Mullybrannon, also known as Robert of Ashgrove which may be the name he gave to his house. They inherited farms in Gortshalgon and Drumgose from her father, James McReynolds. Robert King's will is dated 1847. The children of Charlotte and Robert King:
      1. James King was born in 1805 and was married.
      2. Henry King was born in 1807.
      3. Robert King inherited land in Cloghog from his grandfather but sold it the same year to William Lee. It is now owned by John McKee.
      4. Samuel King
      5. daughter King who did not marry.
      6. daughter King who did not marry.
    2. Sarah McReynolds was born in 1785. An extant marriage settlement dated Sep.1, 1804, tells of the marriage of Sarah, the daughter of James McReynolds of Coash and David Shuter, the son of William Shuter of Drummond and involves land in Drummond. Sarah died before 1807. David was bequeathed 5 shillings in his father-in-law's will. The children of David and Sarah Shuter:
      1. Mary Shuter married William McCrum. In his will, James McReynolds, Mary's grandfather leaves her land in Renaghan and Drummurrer. He also left William ``five pence and no more''. Mary and William are said to have emigrated to the U.S.
    3. John McReynolds was born in 1787 and died young.
    4. Martha McReynolds was born in 1789 and was married twice. Her marriage settlement with Henry King of Mullybrannon is dated Jan.5, 1807, and involved land in Mullybrannon. Henry and Martha King had four children listed below. Henry must have died for Martha later married Charles Fielding and had at least three more children also listed below. Martha Fielding inherited the farm in Mullaghteague from her father James McReynolds. In the same will her husband Charles Fielding was bequeathed ``5 pence and not a penny more''.
      1. Samuel King was known as ``Long Sam'' of Ashgrove.
      2. Robert King inherited the farm in Lower Meenagh and premises in Cloghog from his grandfather James McReynolds. In the Griffith Valuation of about 1860 Robert's holdings from Viscount Valentia in the townland of Meenagh, parish of Clonoe, are listed as a house, offices (farm buildings), flax mill, store and land. The land is over 37 acres, worth over 30 pounds and the buildings are worth 28 pounds. Robert lived at Meenagh Mill (otherwise called Annesley Lodge) until his death in the late 1800s. Robert married Olivia Ann Bridges and had children:
        1. Henry King
        2. Matilda King married Henry Pringle.
        3. James King
        4. Olivia King married James Pringle.

      3. James King was born in 1816 and received a bequest in his grandfather James McReynolds' will. He emigrated to the US and, in the 1840 Illinois Census was living near Metropolis in Pope County. When his brother-in-law, James Pringle, died in Illinois in 1841 he was appointed guardian of Pringle's four children. On Apr.7, 1844, James married Melvina King (no relation - she was born in Tennessee) and they had two children. At that time in Illinois there was serious armed conflict between a group called the Regulators and another called the Liberators (or Flatheads). Melvina's brother, Clerk King, the leader of the Regulators was killed in this conflict, and so James and Melvina moved to Blackriver Township, Independence County, Arkansas where they appear in the 1850 Census. Melvina must have died in the 1850s for in the 1860 Census, James is married to Mary A. Lawrence, known as Dolly. They had many children listed below, some of whom also appear in the 1870 Census. James died in 1877. His children:
        1. Henry A. King was born in Pope County, Illinois, in 1844, the son of James and Melvina King.

Joining the Indian Medical Service, Jack was in the First World War and, on Jan.21, 1916, at Orah Ruins, Mesopotamia, he was involved in a conflict for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. As he attended the wounded he was shot through both arms and through the side and yet remained on duty. Later he became a Brigadier and a medical researcher; for his work on malarial parasites he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and awarded an OBE (he is the only Fellow of the Royal Society to also have won the Victoria Cross). She married James Pringle (1807-1841) the younder brother of John Pringle, her siste Mary's husband. (There is a record of a Sarah, daughter of Henry King, who married another Robert King and lived on a farm in Dunseark near Benburb. This is apparently not the same Sarah.) Sarah and James emigrated to the US where James had previously been and settle in Ohio where their first two children were born. They then moved to Pope County, Illinois, about 1837. James died in 1841 and his children were made guardians of Sarah's brother James King who had also emigrated to the US. On Mar.12, 1845, Sarah was married for a second time to Jacob Cable but in the 1850 Census she is living with her children in Massac County, Illinois. The children of Sarah and James Pringle:

There he volunteered and became an ensign in the Duquesne Grays of Pittsburgh. In 1833 he moved to Detroit and in 1834 was one of four to establish the Brady Guards, the first volunteer company in Michigan. He became a lawyer and was an Alderman of Detroit in 1837-38. In 1839 he was a member of the National Convention which nominated William Henry Harrison for President. That same year he was elected to be a State Senator, a position he resigned in April, 1847, when he was commissioned Captain of the Dragoons in the U.S.Army and took part in the Mexican War under the command of General Scott. He was disabled for life in the dragoon charge at the gates of Mexico. After the war he retired from the army and resumed his profession in Detroit. He was a Prosecuting Attorney of Wayne County in 1852 and Member of the Board of Education and its first President. When the Civil War occurred he was commissioned Colonel of the Lincoln Cavalry, the first cavalry regiment of the war. He commanded a brigade and then a division. After serving for just over three years he was honorably discharged and took up residence in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he practiced as a lawyer. He held numerous civic offices including that of Indian Agent under John Tyler and he served as a Director of the Detroit City Bank. An article in the Daily Chronicle (Muskegon, Michigan) on Dec.27, 1897, reports on the 91st birthday celebration for Colonel McReynolds who was spending the winter with his daughter, Mrs.F.A.Nims, a resident of Houston Avenue, Muskegon. The rest of this information is taken from the Michigan Wayne County Chronography (F90196.97), a copy of which was sent to me by Maxine Davies. CHILDREN OF JAMES McRANNELLS (son of John and Mary Preston McRannells):

Mary McRannells married David Holmes of Kingsmill on Nov.2, 1755.

John McRannells was born in Cloghog but left there when quite a young man. His name is noted in a set of maps for the city of Armagh in 1783 and Elizabeth Cornwall in the 1784 Deed described below lists his residence as Armagh. He became a surgeon.

James McRannells was born in Cloghog. He married Margaret Cornwall, who was probably the daughter of Anthony Cornwall and sister of surgeon Gabriel Cornwall of Stewartstown. A curious deed was made out in 1784 after Gabriel Cornwall's death. It is an agreement between his widow, Elizabeth Cornwall, on the one hand and James and Margaret McReynolds of Moneymore, Anthony McReynolds of Moneymore, John McReynolds of Armagh City, and James, junior, Rowley and Gabriel McReynolds of Cloghog on the other hand. It states that Elizabeth bestows on James and Margaret 250 pounds and on Anthony 50 pounds on condition that all the McReynolds give up any further claim on her property. Presumably Cornwall died owing the McReynolds a substantial sum and this records the settlement. James and Margaret McReynolds moved to Kingsmill where the home that they built about 1740 is still owned and occupied by their descendents. James was a doctor and a farmer. He is buried in Moneymore cemetery. The children of James and Margaret McReynolds:

  1. Anthony McReynolds married Lydia Dudgeon, daughter of Joseph Dudgeon, a lawyer in Stewartstown. In 1784, Anthony was living in Moneymore. The records of the parish of Clonoe, state that on Oct.31, 1796, Anthony was appointed one of two captains in charge of the Aughalarg and Clonoe yeomanry and remained so until at least 1804. He built a home at Barnhill near Stewartstown which he called Lydiaville. The house is still in good condition. Anthony and Lydia had at least one child:
    1. Elinor McReynolds married Hugh Elliott in 1813 in Donaghenry Parish Church.
  2. Dorcas McReynolds was born in 1749. He died in 1804 and is buried in Moneymore.
  3. Gabriel McReynolds lived at Cloghog.
  4. Roland McReynolds was born in 1754. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Ray and they lived in Cloghog. Roland died in 1834 and a story is told of Betty living alone at the age of 91. A mob is said to have gathered outside her home (perhaps looking for apples) and she is said to have kept them at bay by firing shots through a boxwood hedge until help arrived. After this she lived with her brother-in-law John McReynolds where she died in 1851 at the age of 96. The children of Roland and Betty McReynolds:
    1. William McReynolds emigrated to the United States.
    2. Cornwall McReynolds was born in Cloghog in 1793. He married Martha Watson, born in 1802, and they lived in the townland of Aughamullan, parish of Clonoe. In the Griffith Valuation of about 1860, ``Cornelius'' McReynolds is listed as holding over 7 acres of land worth nearly 6 pounds and a house worth fifteen shillings in the townland of Aughamullan, property owned by the Commissioners of Endowed Schools. Cornwall died in 1873 and Martha in 1896; they are buried in the Clonoe parish cemetery. Their children:
      1. Elizabeth McReynolds was married to Thomas McLean of Cloghog in 1846.
      2. Arabella McReynolds was born in 1826 and, in 1845, was married to Leonard Twynem of Seagoe Parish. Leonard died prior to Nov.16, 1853, for on that day, Arabella Twinim, a widow from Aughamullion whose father was farmer Cornelius McReynolds was married in the Clonoe Parish Church to John Johnston, 23, a bachelor farmer from Aughamullion whose father was farmer William Johnston. John Johnston moved to Wigan, Lancashire, after Arabella's death and he and his family appear in the 1881 Census. Arabella's children:
        1. Watson Twinam, the son of Arabella and Leonard Twynem, moved to Wigan with John Johnston after his mother's death.
        2. John Cornwall Johnstone was born about 1861 and moved to Wigan, Lancashire, with his father after his mother's death. In 1882 in Wigan he married Ellen Hancock (born in 1863, died in 1941), the daughter of William Hancock and Elizabeth Ellen Dearden. Along with their eldest son, William, John and Ellen emigrated to Queensland, Australia, where 9 other children were born. Some of their children:
          1. William Johnstone was born in Wigan and emigrated to Queensland with his parents.
          2. Bennett Johnstone who may have married Daisey May Wright in Queensland in 1917 and had two daughters, Olive and Bernice Johnstone.
      3. Watson McReynolds was born in 1829.
    3. Roland McReynolds, Jr., was born in Cloghog in 1802. He married Mary Kelso and they lived in Cloghog for several years before emigrating about 1840 to the United States where they settled in Cleveland, Ohio. There Roland worked as a teamster. According to the 1850 census of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, their children were:
      1. William McReynolds was born in Cloghog in 1830. He operated a flour and feed store in Cleveland and married a woman named Minerva. According to the 1860 census of Cleveland they had three children, Roland, aged 4, William, aged 2, and Bradley, aged 6 months.
      2. Eliza Jane McReynolds was born in 1832 in Ireland.
      3. Agnes McReynolds was born in 1836 in Ireland.
      4. Mary McReynolds was born in 1839 in Ireland.
      5. John Kelso McReynolds was born in Cloghog in 1845. According to the 1860 census he was living in Cleveland, Ohio, with his brother William. John married Abby Jane ? (born 1844) about 1865 and served in the 2nd New York Artillery during the Civil War. Afterwards he lived in Pennsylvania for a time before settling in Trenton, Grundy County, Missouri in 1872. The ancestral home (left) and mill ruins (right) at Kingsmill

William McRannells of whom we know little.

Thomas McRannells was born at Cloghog in 1740, the son of James McRannells. He married Elizabeth Courtney and the family history remembers three sons though there were probably other children. Thomas and Elizabeth moved to Kingsmill where they began the Kingsmill branch of the McReynolds family. That thatched ancestral home continues to be maintained and is now a featured local attraction (see http://www.kingsmillscottages.com and the above photograph). Thomas died in 1798. The children of Thomas and Elizabeth McReynolds (the Kingsmill McReynolds):

  1. James McReynolds is remembered as a son of Thomas and Elizabeth McReynolds. He died in 1840.

  2. William McReynolds was born in 1777, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth McReynolds. He became a farmer in the townland of Edernagh which is adjacent to Ballymaguire in the Parish of Artrea. He may have been a brother of Thomas. He may also have been the William McReynolds who, at the age of 40, was confirmed at a meeting in Cookstown on May 20, 1824. In the 1820s and 30s William was a member of the select vestry of Artrea parish. In an entry dated Sep.23, 1822, members of the parish were appointed from each townland ``..to watch for unmarried woman that are with child and to take measures to prevent their children becoming chargeable on the parish''. William McReynolds was so appointed for the townland of Edernagh. William married Mary Dilworth and they had a number of children listed below. William died in 1844 and was interred at Ballyclog cemetery. He left the following will proved in 1845. To each of his four daughters Elizabeth, Martha, Sarah and Mary he left 350 pounds. Having made provision for his wife Mary formerly Dilworth, he divided his estate equally between his two sons Thomas and Anthony McReynolds. The estate includes lands in the townlands of Edernagh, Lisboy, Liscausy and Mullaghglass. His neighbour Samuel McReynolds of Dromore was one of the executors. The children of William and Mary McReynolds:
    1. Thomas McReynolds was probably born about 1825 and inherited a large part of his father's farm holdings in Edernagh and other surrounding townlands. In the Griffith Valuation of about 1860, Thomas is recorded as holding a large house (worth 22 pounds), outbuildings, a cornmill, a kiln and about 60 acres of land in the townland of Edernagh. The landowner is the Rev. James Jones. He also holds a caretaker's houe and has sublet three small houses to Kennedy Doogan, Patrick Leonard and Thomas Corran. On Jan.9, 1850, Thomas McReynolds, a full-aged bachelor farmer of Edernagh, was married in the Parish Church of Artrea to Jane McReynolds, minor spinster of Ballymaguire. Jane was the daughter of Thomas McReynolds of Ballymaguire (see above and below). Jane was born about 1830 since she was 71 at the time of the 1901 Census. Thomas and Jane had a number of children listed below. In the years 1859/60/61 extensive repairs were made to the Artrea Parish Church and Thomas McReynolds of Edernagh made substantial contributions. In 1859/60 he gave three pounds and fifteen shillings toward repairs; in 1859/60 he gave one pound toward lighting of the church. In Slater's Directory for 1856 and in the Ulster Directories for 1863/64 and 1880, Thomas McReynolds of Kingsmill is included in a list of the gentry of Stewartstown, County Tyrone. There is also a lease dated 1875/76 in which Thomas McReynolds leases lands in Edernagh and Enniskillen from the estate of John G. Dunbar of Artrea. Thomas McReynolds of Kingsmill was also a member of the select vestry of the Parish of Artrea during the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s. He died in 1894 and the 1901 Census lists the 71-year-old widow Jane McReynolds as living in Edernagh with her daughter Anne. They are listed as Church of Ireland. Both Thomas and Jane are interred in Ballyclog cemetery. The children of Thomas and Jane McReynolds:
      1. William T. McReynolds was born in Ballymaguire on Oct.21, 1850. He died in 1873 at the age of 22.
      2. Mary McReynolds was born in 1853 and married Arthur Bell. They belonged to the Carland Presbyterian Church which records the baptism of three of their children. Mary died in 1922. Their children:
        1. David Bell was baptized in Carland Presbyterian Church on May 18, 1884.
        2. William Thomas Bell was baptized in Carland Presbyterian Church on Oct.16, 1887.
        3. Anna Sophia Bell was baptized in Carland Presbyterian Church on May 30, 1889.
      3. Eliza Sarah McReynolds was born in 1855 and married William Orr. Eliza died in 1932.
      4. Jane McReynolds was born in 1857 and married Anthony Courtney. Jane died in 1936.
      5. Anna Sophia McReynolds was born in 1860. In the 1901 Census she is listed as a 40-year-old unmarried seamstress living with her mother in Edernagh. Anna died in 1939.
      6. Thomas James McReynolds was born in 1862 and probably died young for a later son was named Thomas.
      7. Lucinda McReynolds and her twin sister Charlotte were born in Edernagh on Jan. 3, 1864.
      8. Charlotte Louisa McReynolds was Lucinda's twin sister. She died in 1906.
      9. Thomas Alexander McReynolds was born in Edernagh on Jan.5, 1866. He inherited the family farm holdings in Edernagh. On Feb.29, 1892, he married Mary Eliza Steenson (Stinson) and they had a large family listed below. Like his father and grandfather Thomas was active in the Parish Church of Artrea and signed the minutes of the select vestry in 1903 as Thomas McReynolds of Kingsmill. He also served as a Rural District Councillor. In the 1901 Census, Thomas is listed as a 35-year-old farmer living in Edernagh with his 37-year-old wife Mary E. McReynolds, the children as indicated below, Mary McGregor, a 77-year-old retired widowed farmer (born in County Antrim) who is visiting the house and a 17-year-old, unmarried domestic servant by the name of Mary Ann Vallely. Mary Eliza died on Jan.24, 1924, and Thomas on Oct.25, 1936. The children of Thomas Alexander and Mary Eliza McReynolds:
        1. Thomas Alexander McReynolds was born in 1892 and is listed as 8 years old in
          Thomas A. McReynolds
the 1901 Census. In the 1911 Census he is still living in Edernagh and working on his father's farm. When he signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 he was living in Edernagh. Prior to WW1 Thomas served in the British Army with the North Irish Horse. When war was declared, he enlisted with the Dragoon Guards in Glasgow and was sent to France in 1914 where he was wounded twice. He transferred to the 16th Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in the autumn of 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres and shortly after joining he was reported missing during an advance at Polygon Wood, Belgium. He was killed in action on Oct.9, 1917, and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
        2. Edward Norman McReynolds was born on Sep.20, 1895, and is listed as 6 years old in the 1901 Census. When he signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 he was living in Edernagh. He died in 1944.
        3. Austin McReynolds was born on Mar.24, 1897, and is listed as 4 years old in the 1901 Census. He died in 1970.
        4. Mabel Gwendolene McReynolds was born in 1898 and is listed as 2 years old in the 1901 Census. She died in 1966.
        5. William McReynolds was born on Jan.25, 1900, and is listed as 1 year old in the 1901 Census. On Sep.4, 1927, in Penzance, Cornwall, he married Charlotte ``Lottie'' Ferguson from Albany, Stewartstown. William and Lottie were farmers and lived in the ancestral home at Kingsmill. Sadie Kerr remembers William as a second cousin of our Martha McReynolds. A gravestone at Artrea Parish Church commemorates William McReynolds who died on Dec.18, 1982 aged 82 and his wife Lottie Elizabeth McReynolds who died Oct.26, 1978, aged 76. They had three children:
          1. Derek McReynolds was born on Sep.6, 1934. On Nov.19, 1958, he married Molly Elizabeth Harris in Derryloran Parish Church. They had three children:
            1. Cheryl Elizabeth McReynolds, born Aug.16, 1959.
            2. Jacqueline McReynolds, born Jun.21, 1964.
            3. Thomas Darron Porter McReynolds who was born in 1968.
          2. William Ronald Stanley McReynolds who was born on Sep.24, 1936.
          3. Evelyn Gwendolene McReynolds, born Jul.16, 1940, who died of epilepsy about 1980.
        6. Samuel McReynolds was born about 1901 and is listed as 1 month old in the 1901 Census. He must have died in infancy for family history does not remember him.
        7. George Ernest McReynolds was born on Mar.28, 1901, and died in 1955.
        8. Albert Edward McReynolds was born on Aug.26, 1902, and died in 1923.
        9. Ivy Violet McReynolds was born on Oct.31, 1904.
      10. Samuel McReynolds was born in Edernagh on Jan.15, 1868. In the 1901 Census he is listed as a 33-year-old unmarried farmer living alone in Edernagh.
      11. James McReynolds was born in Edernagh on Feb.10, 1871, and died in 1901.
      12. Albert Edward McReynolds was born in Edernagh on Jan.2, 1873. He married a woman named Ellen. In the 1901 Census he is listed as a 28-year-old grocer and dealer living with his 26-year-old wife Ellen in the townland of Tullyraw, Parish of Artrea. Albert died in 1926.
    2. Anthony McReynolds was born about 1820 and may have been baptized in Kilsally on Sep.11, 1825. He inherited the other part of his father's farm holdings. In 1850, Anthony who is listed as a full-aged bachelor farmer of Kingsmill whose father is farmer William McReynolds was married in the Presbyterian Church of Coagh to Eliza Jane Gray, a minor spinster of Ballynargan, parish of Tamlaght, whose father was farmer Alex Gray. Ballynargan was next door to Kingsmill. Eliza's mother was born Elizabeth Dunn of Dunnesville, the property just across the road from the mill at Kingsmill. It was somewhat unusual that the wedding took place in a Presbyterian Church since the groom was Church of Ireland. There is some family tradition that Anthony and Eliza Jane moved away from the area for some time but that ``it did not work out.'' Whatever happened, Anthony and Eliza were recorded as living in Ballynargan when two of their children were christened at Coagh Presbyterian Church.
      Gravestone of Anthony
      McReynolds family
In the Griffith Valuation of about 1860, Anthony is listed as holding just over 24 acres in the townland of Lisboy and just over 14 acres in the townland of Liscausy from Rev. James Jones. In Lisboy he sublets a house to Catherine Devlin and in Liscausy he sublets two houses, one to Anne Johnston. Anthony also holds just over 44 acres in the townland of Ballynargan, parish of Arboe, from Rev. W. Chichester O'Neill; he also holds a house worth three pounds and ten shillings on this land and sublets a house to Robert Wyley. It seems possible that these holdings in Ballynargan came from his wifes family. In 1860/61 Anthony gave a shilling toward the new lighting in Artrea Parish Church. However, from his descendants, we know that Anthony blew all his wealth by gambling on the horses. It seems probable that these losses led to the letters [PRONI D664/D/222/A to D] from Armagh dated March 1863 from a land steward give details of an attempt to settle the affairs of a Mr. and Mrs. McReynolds of Ardtrea. ``I received a list of McReynolds debts from Mr. Jones, the curate at Ardtrea, upwards of a month ago. It amounts to 280 pounds and I know that McReynolds owes his sister about 50 pounds in addition. I annex a copy of the list .....''. ``McReynolds wife wishes to emigrate and leave him. He is a sort of imbecile (aged about 45). He might well give her what would take her out of the country (say 10 or 15 pounds)....''. Brother Thomas is said to have bought out the remains of Anthony's share of the estate and that money apparently paid for the emigration (in the period 1865-71) of the entire family to Innisfill Township, Ontario, Canada, about 50km north of Toronto. The 1871 census of Canada lists the family living in Innisfill Township as consisting of Anthony (aged 48), Elizabeth (aged 39) and their children William (19), Elizabeth (17), Thomas (15), James (13), John (9) and Sarah (6). All are listed as being Church of Ireland and born in Ireland. Anthony (and son William) are listed as laborers and family legend tells of them working on the railroad which was under construction north from Toronto. Wife Elizabeth Jane took in pupils to teach in her home in Lefroy, where there was no school at the time. One of her pupils who held her in high regard later became president of the Grand Trunk Railroad. It was a hard life. Property records show that Anthony and Elizabeth Jane later owned a house in Orillia, Ontario, about 100km north of Toronto. Anthony died on Mar.24, 1886, at the age of 66, and his wife Elizabeth on Dec.11, 1878, at the age of 48; they were buried in St. Andrews and St. James Cemetery in Orillia though the graves were subsequently relocated. Grandson William James said he recalled tending their graves in Orillia with his sister Sarah in the early 1890s. The children of Anthony and Eliza Jane McReynolds:
      1. William McReynolds is listed in the 1871 Census of Canada as a 19-year-old laborer living with his parents in Innisfill Township, Ontario, Canada. On Apr.26, 1876, at the age of 21, William married Elizabeth Johnston (aged 19), the daughter of James and Jane Johnston, in the town of Orillia. Born in Canada, Elizabeth was a resident of Washago (about 20km north of Orillia) and gave her religion as Episcopalian. At the time William was a resident of Orillia and gave his religion as ``Primitive Methodist.'' On May 13, 1893, while living in Armour Township (about 100km north of Orillia), William, a labourer, died of heart disease at the age of 37. He was buried with his parents. His widow, Elizabeth remarried on Apr.25, 1898, at the age of 36 to a bachelor named Duncan McDonald (aged 45) in the town of Sundridge, Ontario. The couple's residence is given as Burk's Falls, Armour Township. Note that Lefroy, Orillia, Washago, Burk's Falls and Sundridge are all on the railroad north from Toronto. As a footnote, we note that on Dec.20, 1894, the death of one William James McReynolds was registered in nearby Katrine, Armour Township. He was born in 1882 and died of ``lifelong spinal disease''. It is possible that William James was a son of William and Elizabeth.
      2. Elizabeth McReynolds was born on Jan.20, 1863, and was christened in August in Coagh Presbyterian Church. She is listed in the 1871 Census of Canada as a 17-year-old living with her parents in Innisfill Township, Ontario, Canada. She is believed to have married James Gilmour on Nov.4, 1886, in Oshawa, Ontario (about 30km east of Toronto).
      3. Thomas Gray McReynolds, born in Ireland, is listed in the 1871 Census of Canada as a 15-year-old living with his parents in Innisfill Township, Ontario, Canada. On Oct.17, 1880, he married Isobel McNabb in Simcoe and they lived in Orillia where Thomas worked for the Ontario Mental Hospital. Thomas died in 1930 without children.
      4. James Dunn McReynolds was born in Ballynargan on Mar.1, 1856, and was christened in Coagh Presbyterian Church on Oct.18, 1857. He is listed in the 1871 Census of Canada as a 13-year-old living with his parents in Innisfill Township, Ontario, Canada. On Dec.25, 1880, at the age of 21, he married Margaret Whipps (aged 22) of Orillia. She was Baptist and he was Primitive Methodist. Margaret was the daughter of a pioneering Orillia farmer Thomas Whipps (from England) and his wife Elizabeth Picken (born in Ireland). The Whipps had earlier had a cartage business in Whitby, Ontario, where Margaret was born. James became qualified at some point as a Stationary Engineer Second Class and operated the electric power plant in Orillia. Margaret died in Orillia on Nov.16, 1904. James Dunn remarried in Toronto about 1911, to Minnie Webber, a widow. Minnie had two sons, one named Ken, who adopted the name McReynolds. Minnie died about 1918 and James about 1923. The children of James and Margaret McReynolds:
        1. Sarah Elizabeth McReynolds was born in 1881 in Orillia and married George Ritter. She died childless in Toronto in 1963.
        2. Thomas McReynolds was born in 1883 in Orillia died that same year.
        3. William James McReynolds was born in 1885 in Orillia and married Ina Evelyn Tuttle. They had six children, two of whom are alive in 2000. William James died in Toronto in 1972. The only child to pass along the McReynolds name was Thomas George McReynolds (1910-1944) who was survived by Dorothy Joan, Linda Ruth and William Peter McReynolds (who provided much of the information on this Canadian branch).
        4. Mabel McReynolds was born in 1893? in Orillia, did not marry and died in Toronto in 1917.
      5. John G. McReynolds, born in Ireland, is listed in the 1871 Census of Canada as a 9-year-old living with his parents in Innisfill Township, Ontario, Canada. He died unmarried at the age of 17 in Orillia on Apr.23, 1879, and was buried beside his parents.
      6. Sarah McReynolds, born in Ireland, is listed in the 1871 Census of Canada as a 6-year-old living with her parents in Innisfill Township, Ontario, Canada. She married Philip Lillie and they had 5(?) children.
    3. Oliver McReynolds was baptized in the Parish of Artrea on Jan.14, 1826. He may have died before 1845 for his father divided his his estate between the other two brothers, Thomas and Anthony.
    4. Elizabeth McReynolds inherited 350 pounds from her father William when he died in 1845.
    5. Martha McReynolds inherited 350 pounds from her father William when he died in 1845. She may be same individual as the daughter of William and Mary who was baptized as Matilda in Kingsmill on Aug.16, 1829. Also a Martha McReynolds was confirmed in the Parish of Artrea on Sep.20, 1843. On Mar.11, 1857, Martha McReynolds, a full-aged spinster farmer of Kingsmill whose father was farmer William McReynolds was married in the Parish Church of Artrea to Jackson Lloyd Atkinson, a full-aged bachelor farmer of Drumnewell (?) in the parish of Killyman whose father was linen merchant Henry Atkinson.
    6. Sarah McReynolds was baptized in Edernagh on Apr.19, 1831. She inherited 350 pounds from her father William when he died in 1845. Sarah married her cousin Thomas McReynolds of Ballymaguire in 1863 and their family is described later.
    7. Mary McReynolds was born in Kingsmill on Sep.15, 1837, her father being listed as a miller. Mary inherited 350 pounds from her father William when he died in 1845.

  3. Samuel McReynolds, a farmer in the townland of Dromore, parish of Arboe, was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth McReynolds. A close relation with both the above William and Thomas McReynolds is suggested not only by the proximity of their lands but also by the fact that Samuel acted as an executor of William's will and a witness of Thomas's will. Samuel must have been born about 1810/20. He married Margaret Stewart and they had several children listed below. In the Griffith Valuation of about 1860 Samuel holds 42 acres of land and a house worth 7 pounds in the townland of Dromore from James A.Caulfield. He also sublets a house in that townland to John Morris. In addition he holds 23 acres and three small houses in the townland of Kilsally from the trustees of John Mackey. Finally Samuel also holds over 17 acres in the townland of Feagh (just south of Dromore) and an acre in the townland of Carnan from the Earl of Castlestuart and sublets three houses in Feagh. The Kilsally holdings may refer to those of his son, also called Samuel. In the 1863/64 Ulster directory Samuel McReynolds of Dromore is listed among the gentry of Stewartstown. The children of Samuel and Margaret McReynolds:
    1. William McReynolds was born in Dromore, Arboe, on Aug.2, 1843.
    2. Samuel McReynolds became a farmer and married Frances ``Fanny'' Sullerton. They had a number of children listed below while they were living in the townland of Kilsally. About 1880 they emigrated to the United States. This we know from the letter from their daughter in New York as mentioned below. Their children:
      1. Joseph McReynolds was born on Aug.15, 1872, in Kilsally with Thomas Waugh, M.D. present.
      2. Samuel McReynolds was born on Dec.7, 1874, in Kilsally with Thomas Waugh, M.D. present. He died as an infant in 1875.
      3. Mary Amelia McReynolds was born in Kilsally on Apr.11, 1877. The records of the Parish of Arboe contain letters from Amelia Fraser of 301 E.209th St., New York, written in 1947 and requesting information on her brother Samuel who died as an infant and is buried in Arboe. She states that she emigrated to the USA about 1873(?) when she was about 4 years old.
    3. Anne Jane McReynolds, a full-aged spinster of Dromore whose father was farmer Samuel McReynolds, was married on Oct.20, 1859, in the Third Presbyterian Church, Cookstown, to Henry Haslett Whan, a full-aged bachelor farmer of Killywoolaghan whose father was farmer James Whan.
    4. Eliza Martha McReynolds, a full-aged spinster of Dromore whose father was farmer Samuel McReynolds, was married on Dec.14, 1866, in the Newmills Meetinghouse, to George McCullough, a full-aged bachelor farmer also of Dromore whose father was farmer George McCullough.
    5. Oliver McReynolds who was born about 1836 was probably the son of our Samuel McReynolds and became a farmer in the townland of Ballynafeagh which is just to the west of the townlands of Feagh and Dromore. Oliver was married twice. On May 13, 1862, he married Susan Bell Watters, 19, of Mountjoy, parish of Ballyclog in the Meetinghouse in Newmills. On the certificate Susan's father is listed as farmer John Watters and Oliver is listed as a full-aged, bachelor, farmer from Dromore, parish of Arboe whose father was farmer Samuel McReynolds. Susan died in 1866 at the age of 23. Oliver was married for the second time on Oct.18, 1870, in the Parish Church of Arboe to Jane Abernethy, a minor spinster of Drumard whose father was farmer James Abernethy. On the certificate he is listed as a full-aged, widowed farmer of Ballynafeagh whose father was farmer Samuel McReynolds. Archy McDonald was a witness. Oliver and Jane had a number of children listed later. Jane must have died before 1901 for the census of that year lists Oliver as a 65-year-old farmer living with five grown children in the townland of Ballynafeagh. Oliver and Jane's children:
      1. Margaret Jane McReynolds was born in Ballynafeagh on Dec.1, 1871.
      2. Thomas McReynolds was born in Ballynafeagh on Mar.30, 1873, with Sarah Abernethy present. In the 1901 Census he is listed as a 25-year-old unmarried farmer's son living with his father in Ballynafeagh and when he signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 he was living in Ballynafeagh.
      3. James McReynolds was born in Dromore on Apr.20, 1874, with Matilda Abernethy present. In the 1901 Census he is listed as a 23-year-old unmarried farmer's son living with his father in Ballynafeagh and when he signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 he was living in Ballynafeagh.
      4. Matilda McReynolds was born in Ballynafeagh on Jan.1, 1876, with Matilda Abernethy present.
      5. Oliver McReynolds was born in Ballynafeagh on Jul.1, 1877. In the 1901 Census he is listed as a 21-year-old unmarried farmer's son living with his father in Ballynafeagh and when he signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 he was living in Ballynafeagh.
      6. Eliza Martha McReynolds was born in Ballynafeagh on Mar.6, 1879. In the 1901 Census she is listed as a 19-year-old unmarried farmer's daughter living with her father in Ballynafeagh and when she signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 she was living, unmarried, in Ballynafeagh.
      7. Susan Bell McReynolds was born in Ballynafeagh on Sep.3, 1880. In the 1901 Census she is listed as a 17-year-old unmarried farmer's daughter living with her father in Ballynafeagh and when she signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 she was living, unmarried, in Ballynafeagh.

  4. Thomas McReynolds of Ballymaguire, born around 1800, may have been a son of Thomas and Elizabeth McReynolds though the family history only remembers the three other sons, James, William and Samuel. It is also possible that he was the son of Oliver, son of Oliver, the third son of John and Mary Preston McRannells. Thomas became a farmer in the townland of Ballymaguire in the Parish of Artrea, County Tyrone. He married a woman named Mary. In the Griffith Valuation of about 1860 Thomas is listed as holding (from the trustees of John Mackey) over 21 acres of land in Ballymaguire along with a house worth one pound and fifteen shillings. He also sublets two small houses in Ballymaguire to Eliza Waters and Sarah Sands. In addition he holds a little over 9 acres with a caretaker's house in the townland of Mullaghglass from Richard Babington and over 5 acres in the townland of Kilsally from the trustees of John Mackey. He also holds 15 acres in Kilsally which he sublets to Thomas Sands. Thomas died on Mar.12, 1860, at Ballymaguire and left the following will. To his daughter Sarah who is a minor he left 500 pounds; she must live with her brother Thomas until she comes of age. To his daughter Jane McReynolds of Kingsmill he leaves 150 pounds. His wife Mary receives 18 pounds per annum and other provisions for her well-being. Otherwise he leaves his estate including lands in Drumbulgin, Ballymaguire, Kilsally and Mullaghglass to his son Thomas McReynolds. The children of Thomas and Mary McReynolds:
    1. Thomas McReynolds of Ballymaguire, the son Thomas and Mary McReynolds of Ballymaguire, was baptized in the Parish of Arboe on Aug.21, 1835. When his father died in 1860, Thomas inherited almost all of his father's holdings in Ballymaguire and the surrounding townlands of Drumbulgin, Kilsally and Mullaghglass. On Jan.29, 1863, Thomas McReynolds, a full-aged bachelor farmer of Ballymaguire was married in the Parish Church of Arboe to Sarah McReynolds, a full-aged spinster of Edernagh whose father was farmer William McReynolds. Sarah was, in all likelihood, Thomas's cousin and her family is described earlier. Anthony Dilworth and Samuel Burns witnessed the marriage. Thomas and Sarah had a number of children who are described later. Thomas was an active member of Artrea Parish Church and was a member of the select vestry of the parish in the 1880s and 1890s. Thomas died on Dec.17, 1894, and is named in a grant of administration in 1895. In his will he left his substantial estate worth 5832 pounds, 15 shillings and 6 pence to his wife Sarah [PRONI LPC/857]. The children of Thomas and Sarah McReynolds:
      1. Charlotte Annie McReynolds was born in the Parish of Arboe on Dec.15, 1863. In the 1901 Census she is listed as 37 years old, unmarried and living with her sister Sarah in Ballymaguire.
      2. William Thomas McReynolds was born in Ballymaguire on Apr.2, 1866.
      3. Sarah McReynolds was born in Stewartstown on Dec.3, 1867. In the 1901 Census she is listed as a 33-year-old farmer and the unmarried head of the household in Ballymaguire. The family are all listed as belonging to the Church of Ireland. Mary Mitchell, a 23-year-old unmarried servant, and Robert Smith, a 55-year-old unmarried farm labourer, are also listed in the census. Sarah and her sister Harriet, sailed for the United States aboard the ``Caledonia'' from Londonderry, arriving in New York on May 21, 1911. They were on the way to visit a friend of their sister, Emily, at ``The Andsbury(?)'', 93 Hough Court, Cleveland, Ohio.
      4. Emily Frances McReynolds was born in Ballymaguire on Jun.30, 1870. She married Charles Anderson and died in 1946.
      5. Harriet Adeline McReynolds was born in Ballymaguire on Jan.31, 1873. In the 1901 Census she is listed as an unmarried 27-year-old seamstress living with her sister Sarah in Ballymaguire. Harriet married Thomas Greeves and died in 1940.

    2. Jane McReynolds, the daughter of Thomas and Mary McReynolds, married her cousin Thomas McReynolds of Kingsmill. Their family has been describe earlier. Jane received 150 pounds from her father when he died.

    3. Sarah McReynolds was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Mary McReynolds. A parish record states that a Sarah was born on Jul.15, 1843, in the Parish of Arboe to Thomas and ``Nancy'' McReynolds and this probably refers to our Sarah who was a minor when her father died in 1860. Because of this she received 500 pounds in her father's will but was required to live with her brother Thomas until she came of age. On Mar.26, 1867, a Sarah McReynolds, a full-aged spinster of Bogbane, parish of Killyman, whose father was Thomas McReynolds was married in the Coalisland Church (Brackaville?) to Anthony Dilworth, a full-aged bachelor farmer of Coalisland whose father was farmer Anthony Dilworth.

Martha McReynolds, our ancestor, was born to her unmarried mother, Jane Ferguson of Edernagh, Co. Tyrone, on Jan.28, 1849, and was baptized on Apr.8, 1849, in the Parish of Ardtrea, County Tyrone. At the present time we have not been able to determine her connection to the above family though family legend maintains that she belonged to the Kingsmill McReynolds family. On the certificate of her marriage to Andrew Thomas McDonnell in the Parish Church of Arboe, County Tyrone, on Oct.10, 1867, she is listed as of full age (actually she was only 18 years and 8 months old), a spinster of Mullaghglass, her father being Thomas McReynolds, a farmer. Andrew and Martha McDonald's life and family are described in Chapter 5.

The most likely possibility is that Martha was the daughter of the unmarried Thomas McReynolds of Edernagh, born around 1825, the son of William McReynolds and Mary Dilworth (see above). We note that this fits with the family legend that Martha belonged to the Kingsmill McReynolds family. It was not unknown in those days for an illegitimate child to assume the surname of the father rather than the mother and to have the father listed on subsequent documents such as the aforementioned marriage certificate. Indeed Thomas may have denied being the father. Moreover, it is clear from many other records that Martha (and the rest of the family) recognize Martha's mother to be a woman named Jane Martin and so our speculation is that Martha was the illegitimate child of Thomas McReynolds and Jane Ferguson. The story of Jane Martin born Jane Ferguson is continued below. We note that a year later, on Jan.9, 1850, Thomas McReynolds, a full-aged bachelor farmer of Edernagh, was married in the Parish Church of Artrea to Jane McReynolds, minor spinster of Ballymaguire.

Jane Ferguson was born in Ireland in 1831. She gave birth to her daughter, Martha McReynolds on Jan.28, 1849, according to her daughter's baptismal record in the Parish of Ardtrea, County Tyrone. At that time she was living in Edernagh, County Tyrone. She was married on Jun.29, 1852, in Arboe Parish Church to bachelor labourer James Martin whose father was Alex Martin, a farmer of Mullaghglass. Jane is listed as of full age (actually she was only 18 years and 8 months old), a spinster of Tamlaghtmore whose father was James Martin, a farmer. The birth of Andrew and Martha McDonald's third son, Andrew, in 1879 in Gortigal, Stewartstown, Co.Tyrone, was attended by Jane Martin. Jane Martin is included in the 1881 Census record for 230 Nuneaton Street, Barrowfield, Glasgow, Scotland, where she is listed as the 50-year-old, Irish-born, mother-in-law of Andrew McDonald (the mother of Martha McDonald) in Andrew's household. James, husband of Jane Martin, must have died before 1881 when Jane is listed as living at 230 Nuneaton Street, Glasgow with her daughter, Martha. Jane Martin is also included in the 1891 Census record for 44 East John Street, Glasgow, where she is listed as the 67-year-old, Irish-born, mother-in-law and housekeeper in Andrew McDonald's household. In the 1901 Census of Ireland, Martha McReynolds is recorded living in the townland of Killywoolahan (just north of Killycolpy), County Tyrone, and working as a domestic. The other residents of the house are Martha's mother, Jane Martin, a 70-year-old blind widow and Martha's son, James. According to her death certificate, Jane Martin died on May 23, 1906, in Tamnavalley at the age of 75 years. She died from apoplexy (second attack, no medical attendant) with Martha Macdonald, her daughter, present. Jane is recorded as a farmer's widow. The McDonald family bible records the death of ``Grandma'' on May 23, 1906. Sadie Kerr remembers that in 1945, a young man named Hugh Martin lived in the back gate lodge of the Drumcairne estate and she thinks that Hugh was some kind of cousin to her father James MacDonald. Incidentally Hugh was murdered by the I.R.A. during the 1980s. The children of James and Jane Martin:

  1. James Martin was born on Jul.29, 1858, in Arboe with a father James Martin and a mother Jane. James is listed in the 1881 Census of Scotland as a 23-year-old labourer in an iron foundry, born in Ireland and living at 230 Nuneaton Street, Barrowfield, Glasgow, Scotland, with his mother. James married a woman named Mary Ann born about 1860. In the 1901 Census they are recorded living in Waterside, Londonderry, together with seven children, Maggie (21), Cussie (19), Patrick (16), Annie (13), Bridget M (11), Alice Jane (8) and Theresa (5).
  2. William Martin was born in 1864 and died in Chicago in 1890.

Another curiosity is that Martha McReynolds went on to marry Andrew Thomas MacDonald (see Chapter 5) whose mother, Elizabeth, was Elizabeth Martin prior to her marriage to Alexander MacDonald. Elizabeth Martin was probably born about 1820 and so could have been Jane Martin's sister-in-law.
