ROBINSON FAMILIES

Family of Beriah Robinson:

  1. Beriah Robinson was born about 1807. He married Elizabeth Paterson, born about the same year. In the Griffith Valuation of 1860, Beriah is listed as holding a house, offices, mill and kiln as well as about 20 acres of land in the Townland of Oughterard, Parish of Desertcreat (from Charles Boyle) (he also leases a house to Samuel Moore). Elizabeth must have died in Ireland before 1868 for she did not accompany the family to New Zealand. Beriah and Elizabeth had about eleven children listed below. As described below, several of their adult children emigrated to New Zealand and, in 1868, Bariah and other family members followed them. Beriah, his son Beriah, and other children, William, Jemima, Charlotte, and Sarah sailed to New Zealand in the Light Brigade which left London on May 18, 1868, and arrived in Lyttelton on Aug.26, 1868. Beriah died in New Zealand on May 31, 1887. The children of Beriah and Elizabeth:
    1. Anne Jane Robinson was born about 1837. On Oct.30, 1856, in Sandholes Presbyterian Church, parish of Desertcreat, 19-year-old Anne Jane married John Thompson, full-age bachelor farmer of Alless(?) (possibly Kildress), son of John Thompson, farmer. When the rest of the family emigrated to New Zealand, Anne Jane and John remained in Cookstown where they were shopkeepers.
    2. Mary Robinson. David Greer, full age, bachelor, farmer, of Gortavilly, Desertcreat (father: James Greer, farmer) was married to Mary Robinson, full age, spinster, of Oughterard, Desertcreat (father: Beriah Robinson, farmer) on Sep.22, 1865, in the Presbyterian Church, Sandholes, parish of Desertcreat. In 1865 David and Mary Greer, along with family members James and Matilda Nicholls, their son Alexander and Elizabeth Robinson emigrated to New Zealand on the Victory. They left London on Dec.16, 1865. and arrived in Lyttelton on Mar.24, 1866. They then settled in Christchurch on the south island. The Greers bought land on what is now Greers Road and the Nicholls bought land in Halswell in the area now called Nicholls Street. Their letters home encourage the second wave of Robinson emigration (see above).
    3. James Robinson. James Robinson, full age, bachelor, farmer, of Oughterard, Desertcreat (father: Baria Robinson, farmer) was married to Mary Elizabeth Eccles, full age, spinster, of Kiltyclay, Desertcreat (father: Adam Eccles, farmer) in Third Presbyterian Church, Cookstown, on Mar.31, 1863. James and Mary Eliza had two children (listed below) of whom we are aware. They were born in Ireland and James is listed as a miller living in Kiltyclay, Pomeroy. James and Mary also emigrated to New Zealand at some point after 1870.
      1. female Robinson was born on May 3, 1864, in Kiltyclay, Pomeroy to James Robinson (miller) and Mary Eliza (Eccles) of "Waterard".
      2. Emma Jane Robinson was born on Jan.5, 1870, in Kiltyclay, Pomeroy to James Robinson (farmer) and Mary Eliza (Eccles) of "Waterard". Robert Eccles (occupier) was present.
    4. Elizabeth Paterson Robinson emigrated to New Zealand in the first group with the Greers.
    5. Matilda Robinson. James Nicholl, full age, bachelor, farmer, of Tullyhurken, Ardtrea (father: Gilbert Nicholl, farmer) was married to Matilda Robinson, minor, spinster, of Oughterard, Desertcreat (father: Beriah Robinson, farmer) on Jan.13, 1865, in the Presbyterian Church, Sandholes, parish of Desertcreat. David Greer and Jemima Robinson were witnesses. James and Matilda and their son, Alexander, emigrated to New Zealand in the first group with the Greers. The children of James and Matilda Nicholl:
      1. Alexander Nicholl emigrated to New Zealand with his parents in 1865.
    6. Jemima Robinson emigrated to New Zealand with her father in 1868.
    7. Charlotte Robinson emigrated to New Zealand with her father in 1868.
    8. Beriah Paterson Robinson was born on Jul.25, 1848, and emigrated to New Zealand with his father in 1868. In 1872 he married Margaret Marion Davidson, born Jun.6, 1847. Beriah died about 1902 and Margaret on Jun.1, 1932.
    9. William Robinson emigrated to New Zealand with his father in 1868.
    10. Sarah Isabella Robinson emigrated to New Zealand with her father in 1868.
