Thanks

A large part of my enjoyment of these adventures was derived from the group of young people (and a few oldies) who accompanied me along the way. I am immensely grateful to all of them for their companionship. More than 50 years ago, I began short adventures around my home village in Northern Ireland with my young friends, Frank Johnston and Peter Burton, both sadly gone. I greatly value the memory of my one hike with my brother Michael. In my Oxford days, Terry Jones was a kindred spirit. In the southwestern USA, Doug Hart was a great friend and companion on many of my early adventures in that spectacular part of the world. Randi Poer, John Perry and Scott Smith were dear friends, marvelous company and quite tolerant of elderly eccentricities. In Japan, my principal hosts were Yoi Matsumoto and Yoshi Tsujimoto and to them I owe a great deal for their friendship over many years and for introducing me to some of the great joys of perhaps the most hospitable of all countries, Japan. In Korea, Seung-Joon Lee kept a careful eye on my wanderings. In Australia, I am most grateful for the companionship of my cousin, John Earls, and for the guidance of Danny Francis and Brydie O'Connor. It was my great good fortune to have hiked with all these marvelous young people.

Of all my fellow adventurers none were more precious to me than my beautiful daughters, Dana and Kathy, and two of my grandchildren, Troy and Gavin.
